Write With Pia Sophia - How To Start Writing

Welcome to Write With Pia Sophia!

I am SO excited to embark on this journey with you. There's nothing that I'm more excited about than stories - reading them and writing them. But if you know me at all, that is no surprise to you. In this series, I am going to share my writing tips with you. Are you ready? I know I am!

My very first advice is to just start writing. You may be thinking: isn't that what I'm here to learn? The truth is that the story you want to write is already inside of you. It's right there, at the tip of your fingers. You just have to sit down and write it. The reason that we often don't write is not that we lack time or resources to write (because let's be honest, you don't need more than the standard, free Notes app on your phone or a piece of paper that can be as simple as the back of a tax authority envelope to actually write something down). The reason we don't sit down to write is because we are afraidDon't look at me like that, you know I'm right. We, as a human collective but especially as perfectionist writers, are afraid of failure. What if-scenarios pop up in our head on the beat of the cursor, blinking threateningly on the empty page. I know, I've been there. Oftentimes, I still am there. But, you know what? Every writing needs editing for it to become something worthwhile (I'll get to that another time). And for editing to even become possible, you need to have SOMETHING on paper. It doesn't matter if what you get on paper is not to your liking for now, honestly. The most important thing is that you have something to begin with.

Once you've worked your way through those first words, there's another thing that's important for you to make a good start in becoming a writer. That is to make writing a habit. Ideally, you would want to write as often as possible, daily even. Realistically, you won't. Maybe you'll manage for the first few days, a couple of weeks even, and then... life will get in the way. Trust me. You'll get overwhelmed by the chores you never thought would take up such a huge chunk of your day to begin with. Hear me out, I'm not being pessimistic. I just want to prepare you for what you're about to face. And now that you know this (you're welcome), you can be one step ahead of the game by making realistic goals. Are you a human octopus who juggles more than your eight limbs can keep up with? Maybe it's a good idea to begin humble. Write consistently one hour a week and reward yourself for sticking to your plan. Feeling confident about sticking to your new habit? Expand if you like! I honestly don't care how often, how long and how much you write. The most important thing is that you make it a habit. Because to truly get good at something, you must first fail a thousand times. And that's what those one-hour-a-week-moments are for!

Are you ready to become a writer? While you don't even know half how thrilled I am for you to be reading this, it's time to say goodbye for now. We'll talk to each other soon. And in the meantime, go get some words on paper!
